I searched here but couldn't find it. I don't do many "best of" threads since it's a pretty subjective subject. However...I'm going to say the best Italian in the city is El Barzon. Italian made by a Mexican.

My wife likes Mexican, I like Italian. Go to El Barzon on Junction at Vernor! GREAT Italian food! I'm happy, she's happy.....

For those of you who don't get any farther south than Slow's, take your dollars down to Junction and Vernor, check out Holy Redeemer (where they filmed "The Rosary Murders) and St. Hedwig's and eat at El Barzon.....

Thats strange that they would have a Spanish name for a restaurant that serves Italian food. And isn't Vernor basically Mexicantown?

Fortunately, I don't have to drive 10 miles to get good Italian food.

Buon appetito!

Menu is half Italian and half Mexican. The guy who cooks the Italian is Mexican too. Nevertheless.....It's good stuff. And I have a lot of Italian places within a few miles or less, including Andiamo, which is way over-rated in my opinion.....But Vernor and Junction is worth the trip for the food and the nostalgia. That area isn't technically "Mexicantown" but it's definitely southwest Detroit..which is Mexican area....Used to be all Polish at Vernor/Junction..

A lot of hookers by Michigan/Junction now-a-days. Fort and Junction too.

El Barzon is legendary and an extremely neat concept mixing two great food flavors.

BUT, other great Italian restaurants in Detroit would include:

Downtown:
- Angelina's Italian Bistro (basically Mediterranean Italian)
- Da Edoarado "Foxtown" Grille (never been)
- Andiamo's (upscale chain restaurant w/ a great view)

Eastern Market:
- Roma Cafe (most authentic Italian restaurant in Detroit)

Midtown:
- Mario's Restaurant (my personal favorite)

Palmer Park:
- La Dolce Vita (very trendy)

Springwells:
- Vince's Italiano Ristorante (place looks seriously awesome)

I was seriously disappointed with Vince's the last couple of times I went there. Gracie See's pizza was better....Not sure about Andiamo downtown but the one in dearborn didn't thrill us either. Mario's was better and cheaper.
