I've been researching but there is so much information out there it's hard to find what you need. So i'll ask here...

I'm relocating to the Detroit area for a job in Troy. I'm originally from Michigan but never came up to Detroit really. I'm look for a safe place to live without killing a budget. I'm going to be working from home a lot and would like an active daytime and nightlife area. I don't mind spending a little more to enjoy more. I'm 25 and a women, with the hopes of having a dog.

Any suggestions?

Royal Oak would probably be your best bet. You can find a few single family homes to rent out that are at a good price. As for as nightlife, it's probably one of the more active areas outside of Detroit. I'd try to avoid the condos and high-rise apartments since those are way overpriced.

Yes, I was also going to suggest RO. We live in Rochester, but we're looking to start a family soon. No nightlife needed for us.

Welcome to Oakland County!

I've looked in Royal Oak but I find a lot of "The Amber" apartments. I seen a lot of houses for rent but I didn't know about the safety of renting a house in that area.

Royal Oak is pretty safe. The area it sounds like where you were looking was the northern borders of RO and Clawson. I don't hear too much about Clawson but it's pretty good compared to RO and Troy albeit a little more bedroom community oriented. Downtown RO, which would be where more of the nightlife is located, is around 11 Mile and Main St. You'd actually have to travel pretty far to get into a worrisome area.

Troy is the safest option.. but it's also the most boring. The only questionable area in that city is the southeast area (near Oakland Mall.)

You can also consider adding Birmingham to the list (esp the area along Woodward.)
