Considering Moving to Detroit Golf, Sherwood Park, Green Acres - Feedback please.

I am a young single professional and strongly considering this area - as you can imagine I have met great resistance from family members. I am aware of taxes (as well as the city tax). I just love the area and the homes and spend a great deal of time in neighboring Ferndale and down Detroit itself.

Palmer Park is pretty much out of the question - I have no interest in 6 bedroom house with two fireplaces. Something on a smaller scale with some sort of style architectural. As well as the other historic district (Indian Village, Rosedale, etc..) which are to far from work (Rochester)

thank you for your time

I actually know quite a few people who live in those areas and even for a single person, the smaller houses might seem quite big. You'll have to look pretty hard to find something with less than 2,000 sq ft. You might have to expand out just a bit to find a decent size if you need to. Bagley, across the street of Livernois, has pretty good houses although there are a lot of two family flats so just take note of that while looking.

The more south you go after Puritan St, however, the more likely you'll run into blight. The farther west you go, the smaller the houses get, but with the area is still quite decent until you get to the Lodge Freeway. Crime ought to be no different than Ferndale although services might not be as reliable. Though, I think this an area the city is focusing a lot of services on so you might not have to worry about that.

The only thing would be that a good number of houses might need maintenance and updating just because of age. It would help to check out houses to see if previous owners maintained things well to help save you money in the long run. But overall pretty decent areas and should stay that way with good maintenance and proper attention.

thank you for your reply - yes, prior maintenance is a concern - if it is bad enough(hate to say that) 203k(streamline) loan was an option I was concerned. Just trying to get a feel.

size wise (I could go the room mate route - which would help with taxes/utilities) yes, 2,500-3000 sq ft seems typical in these areas

thanks again
