Does anyone remember the Blind Tuba Player?

I grew up on the East side, on Newport, between Mack & Charlevoix. I remember as a child, about late 1950's, a blind tuba player would sometimes walk down the street, playing his tuba, to get some money. He used a white cane, I don't remember how he could play a tuba and use a cane, but I think I remember him holding the cane in the crook of his arm. I think he was partially sighted.

My mother always sent me out with some change for him, and a cold drink, usually some lemonade. Other kids followed him, taunting him, trying to trip him, putting stuff in his path. Like I said, he was partially sighted, just enough to see stuff in front of him.

Does anyone remember him? Whatever happens to someone like that? Blind, alone (if he had anyone, they would be with him, I would think), walking the streets begging for a few pennies. One day, he just didn't come, I was used to him coming down the street in the afternoon.

Does anyone else remember him?

No one remembers him?

I now remember how he played the tuba and used his white cane. He would walk to certain points, then stop and play his tuba, then walk some more. My mother seemed to know his story, but my mother paased away many years ago. Sadly, there's many stories about the old neighborhood I guess are just lost in time.........

History that will never be shared is a tragic loss for all of us...but your sharing will keep a piece of the tuba player's history alive.

THANKS

I suppose that's true, someone, somewhere will either remember him or at least know his story. I've often thought I'd like to put together a little book, just a private publishing, of my old neighborhood. Not only my family, but many other intriguing people lived then. I'd like to give the book to my kids. I can never take them back to show them my home, since its all torn down. Perhaps a book, with pictures and stories like this, might be of interest to them. let them see where Mom grew up. It was a very colorful, diverse neighborhood in its day!

Rest in Peace, Mr. Tuba Player, wherever you are!
