So interesting! I considered moving to NC with the family years ago, before we settled on SE Michigan. I wouldn't have liked the heat, humidity and enormous bugs. At the time there was very little engineering work there. I guess we lucked out!
Love the changing seasons, especially fall...and spring.

Hah. I was saying the same thing about five months ago. Then I moved back. Try not to let the feelings of nostalgia cloud your ability to come to a reasonable conclusion. You left for a reason, right?

That's all I have to say.

Y'all just stay where you are, we don't need any more miserable northerners down here. I'm in Charlotte, and it is all transplants. I am the one with the accent.
The majority of bad drivers I see are New Yorkers, some people can be rude. People let others in for traffic. People don't honk their horns at you if your foot isn't off the gas pedal within one second. People talk to you when you are out and about.
I'll tell you - the humidity isn't nearly as bad down here either. It does get hot, but this year we only had about 10 days over 90 - compared to 2 years ago we had 80+ days. My went back to MI last summer and the humidity was unbearable for her. We have black widows, copperheads, and large cockroaches (Palmetto Bugs), but I have seen only a few since we moved here.

Vacations? I am 3 hours to the beach, and 2 to the mountains. It takes me 7 hours drive to get to Orlando. I wear shorts into November, and pull them back out in late February. If it snows an inch, my work tells me to stay home.
What do I miss? Cold tap water in the summer, Meijers, the Detroit Lions games and my family I guess. My family has made a great life for ourselves since we moved here 4+ years ago. I wouldn't move back to MI for anything.
Oh - and the schools aren't afraid to say the word Christmas, either.

There's so much nasty stuff in the air that my white car is now black...and we breathe this stuff! It's no wonder we live on cold medicine now. As for driving anywhere...you learn real quick how to be a defensive driver. I've never seen so many stop signs ran and ppl slamming on their brakes to stop. Although the ppl here in NC are generally friendly the good ol boy system is truly in place down here. We tend to do our shopping during the day in the main shopping districts due to the crime and uncertainty of what happens during the nighttime hours. We can't wait to get back to what we know. Back to the state where you can drive without having a heart attack. Back to the state where you can go outside in the summer without sweating too much. Back to where cockroaches aren't a daily occurrence. Back to where ppl will call you by name and talk to you all day long. The southern living isn't for us. Period. I love MI. I love the seasons and the smells. Think twice before taking the move down here.
Do you live in the ghetto or something? I have seen probably 10 cockroaches the past 4 years.

Probably not, it is just North Carolina. German Roaches love the heat.

I've been stuck here my whole life and I relish the idea that I will be living in Tampa. There are some things I will miss about Michigan, but I'll be glad to be out of the rust belt, not have to hear about all the woes of Detroit and Wayne county. I have always longed to live in or near a "proper" city where I don't have to reliant on a car to do basically almost anything. You lose your sanity when you spend your whole life in a burb on the fringes of a dying city. I know this is all a matter of personal opinion, but it seems to me that more fellow Michiganders would agree with my viewpoint.

I lived in NC for 30 years, grew up there, and miss it. What a person experiences in childhood feels "normal", and everything else in comparison is strange. I considered moving to Pittsburgh because the city has so much going for it, but once visiting, I knew it would never feel like home. It absolutely feels like home to those who have family and memories there. It's important for us to create that same sense of "home" for our kids I think, which means staying put wherever you are until they graduate from HS.

I agree. I moved to NC when I was 18 and just moved back to MI a year ago. I didn't like NC at first. The hot weather, the home sick feeling etc but once I was there for a while and explored, I started to love it. I actually miss it. But the extreme extended hot weather is no different in experience than the extreme extended cold weather in MI. It just takes time. I love NC and MI.
