I will be working in Southfield and I am looking for safe areas outside of the city. I don't mind driving 20 min if I have to for a safe location. Price range ~$800/month. Are Farmington Hills, Royal Oak and Novi good areas to live in? Can anyone suggest any nice apartment complexes in these areas?

The suburbs are pretty safe. Detroit proper can be hectic because of dysfunctional city services. Most of the inner-ring suburbs near Detroit have higher crime rates than farther out, but they're still around or under the national average and are no where near as bad as Detroit proper with the exception of a few.
