DETROIT -- A small but growing coffeehouse chain is changing its name amid concern that the moniker meant to celebrate the seed of its main product also is a disparaging term for Hispanics.

Beaner's Coffee, based in East Lansing, Mich., on Friday informed franchisees and employees at its 77 stores in Michigan and eight other states that it would become Biggby Coffee, effective Jan. 31.

"That just doesn't really fall within our mission to have a name that is derogatory," Bob Fish, 44, Beaner's chief executive, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "We felt it was important to do the right thing and change the name."

Jeez..... What next?

But I believe the real reason they changed their name to avoid a law suit brought by the ACLU! I am so tired if this nonsense.

Listen, I'm Irish while I can't say I really like all the rediculous comericals protraying a dancing leprechaun, the drunk Irish jokes, etc that go on around St, Patrick's Day, I have yet to hear about anyone getting anxious about offending us. Where do you think they got the name Paddy Wagon from?

This country has too many people with skin way too thin!

My dear wife is Korean and commonly refers to herself as "oriental". In fact most of her community do as well. She's often scolded for using that term by PC whites who inform her that she's "Asian". They should know better than she huh? Crazier every day.

Yes, alot of people have very thin skin. Perhaps because these things really are offensive.

Offensive to who? Has the Beaner's received complaints? Or is this just a prevention action.

This is a coffee company for pete's sake. Theire name makes perfect sense to me, and anyone that would find it offensive really has some serious issues.

Before too long we will have to carry a book of words to avoid so we won't "offend" anyone.

Hearing **** Jagger sing "European-American Tonk Woman" just wouldn't have the same ring to it.

My God...I can't even say the first name of the leader of the Rolling Stones because it might offend someone. My day is complete.

This PC stuff has gone overboard. Anyone know that in the UK the term handicapped is not PC, while in the US 'disabled' in not PC? I have to be bilingual!

Yes, they have received complaints, but no threats of lawsuits or boycotts or anything.

Don't understand why everyone is giving a company that does the right thing so much grief. They plan to massively expand the company from its 70 locations to over 100 in the next few years. Better to change it now than when they have 500 stores and an established "brand" and want to expand into the South and Southwest parts of the U.S..

Beaner is a derogatory slang term for Hispanics who pick coffee beans.
