This is my first summer living in Farmington Hills are there any public beaches in the area? I have heard about one around Novi?

Thanks

Kensington Metropark and Island lake are the closest that I know of. They are in Milford/Lyon Twp./Brighton Twp.

I cannot think of anyplace in Novi where there is a substantial body of water.

There used to be a little beach of sorts at Walled Lake.

Yes - Kensington is part of the "MetroParks" system and open to the public. Daily entrace is $5 or you can buy an unlimited pass. Great for running/rollerblading/canoing etc too.

Doesn't Walled Lake still have a public beach?

Yes.

You have to buy a pass. I suggest getting a yearly pass. Kensington gives you a pass to all 12 or 13 metroparks (I think there are 12 or 13, it has been a long time since i worked there). Island Lake gives you a pass for all Michigan State Parks. Kensington is more developed with a water slide at one beach, snack bars, two beaches. Island lake was once less weedy, but for the past 20 or so years, Kensington has run what is basically a giant lawn mower in the lake that keeps the weeds cut back.

Dodge Park Number 4 is in Waterford and all you have to do is follow Orchard Lake Rd. north until you get to Keego Harbor, then follow the signs. There is no admission fee if you buy a Michigan recreation pass with your car's registration. The park can get a bit crowded, but it is a great place for a picnic or family gathering and it is about 25 min away from FH. Kensington is also a great choice that is just a few exits away on I96.
