That's a fair analogy. The differences are that Detroit has been in a slow motion hurricane for decades and the Detroit hurricane was human induced (although some believe Bush/Cheney caused Katrina ). Also, in Detroit's case, Federal assistance was not forthcoming. As I've said before, a State of Emergency should be declared in Detroit and Federal troops should be sent in for City Building (the unknown corollary to Nation Building).

About as often as any large city in America with around 700,000 people.

What exactly are they "entitled to" again?

IMO that is the problem with both Detroit and Flint - the people living there have this inexplicable sense of entitlement.

They expect others to come in and fix all their problems and "bring back their jobs" and whatnot, just because "we deserve it" they say. Why do they deserve it? Why are they entitled to anything?

They need to fix their own problems and then they would reap the rewards. As it is, they do nothing but sit and wait - they elect criminals to run their city and then wonder why nothing is getting done. lol They reap what they sow, which is nothing.

This clearly is a LOCAL issue and not a STATE one, because cities like Lansing, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and even Ann Arbor are doing just fine. Why are these places doing well but Detroit and Flint aren't? Because they have put in the legwork to build a foundation for success. They've come up with their own ways to grow and support a local economy that isn't completely reliant on an antiquated (and failing) auto industry. It seems like Detroit/Flint aren't willing to do this.

Vienna: The World's Most Prosperous City - Business Insider

You notice how most of the successful cities on this list are in Europe?
Anyone remember studying how devastated Europe was after WW2?
How poor they were?
Remember the Marshall Plan?
And how it helped Europe recover?
Anyone look at the unemployment rate and social services in Germany? Sweden? Denmark?

Well, if America began its own "Marshall Plan" to save itself from itself,
instead of supposedly "saving" half the world,
may be there'd be hope for Flint and Detroit.
And if the Iraqis deserved freedom and democracy,
shouldn't Americans deserve something too?

Why shouldn't a state's population feel entitled to SOMETHING?
Or are only Washington's and Wall Street insiders entitled to just about everything?

Heck, Bibi Natanyahu rides into Washington, like he owns the place,
and Americans have to feel guilty about having expectations, and/or feeling entitled.

ps. Why is it acceptable to remove a foreign politician BY FORCE, but unacceptable to intervene DIRECTLY, and remove a corrupt American politican, by any means?

I agree with the last two posts. I'm against the social welfare state and at the same time I think it is up to government (i.e. everyone) to clean up the largely abandoned inner city mess that it (we) played a big part in creating. Everyone must realize that the consequence of government subsidized housing booms is the creation of donut holes of abandonment in our cities.

Detroiters aren't going to fix their problems. They are going to do what ex-Detroiters (i.e. suburbanites) did: leave the city. It will be up to the outsiders (the children and grandchildren of ex-Detroiters) to bring life back into the city. In most cases this will mean moving into the city or starting businesses in the city. And it will involve spending outside money (state or federal) to tear down the numerous abandoned homes and buildings.

putting everyone in the same place won't help Detriot & I think its best if the police force disband & fet jobs in other cites.
