And it seems to continue today.

"In October 1987, nearly 10 years after the Metropolitan closed, James Nicita set out to redevelop the building at a cost of $4.5 million and turn it into lofts. But the administration of Mayor Coleman A. Young turned him down, choosing in 1988 to go with D&L Development Corp., run by Diane and Larry Mongo. What would ensue would be a court battle lasting more than seven years, and one of the longest preservation legal battles in city history."

Then we find out why...when Nicita gets the courts to recognize his FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST---

Nicita got some of the documents, which showed that he was actually recommended to get the building and would have put up more money than the Mongos. But the city picked the Mongos, who were friends of Young’s administration. “It seems apparent why the Young administration wouldn’t want Nicita getting his hands on these documents,” MetroTimes wrote in September 1997. It should be noted that if the mayor’s office was indeed playing favorites, it does not mean the Mongos did anything wrong.

“It wasn’t the economy that chased me out,” Nicita said. “It was the horrible decision making” by the city.

LMAO. Agreed. But I see what he is getting at. Some of the investors were ran away from Detroit with the attitude of some of the city leaders.

I know it'll sound racist, but this is the kind of thing we can expect in America when a city is over 80% black. Detroit has a chance to rebound, but it will have to shrink...a lot. Cleveland is finally coming back, and has been for the past decade or two, and it's a LOT smaller than Detroit is now.

I do feel "safer" driving through Detroit than I do in Cleveland. So Cleveland is no longer black?

I do not know much about the demographics of Cleveland, but I am thinking the white guys on city council represent majority white wards and that there is no real "interracial" representation where the council member is not the same race as their constituents?

BUT, it is no doubt because of the white saviours on the city council that Cleveland has been SAVED?

Cleveland is not "saved."

It's about 25-50 years ahead of Detroit from becoming the first major US Ghost town, and that's only because Detroit is/has been bigger. Besides Detroit, it is the only city in the US to have a population decline consistently at the rate it has.

The only reason it's marginally better off than Detroit now is because Cleveland has somewhat better relations with its suburbs and the state of Ohio (for example, Cleveland has an RTA and at least some type of rapid transit system, unlike Detroit) and Cleveland isn't AS bad off financially as Detroit is right now.

That said, I'm not sure how that it's considered "coming back" by any logic.

The whole damn country was set to run of cash a few times. No one called America "dead".

I've never been to Cleveland so I can't comment much on what goes on over there. But it seems to be doing better then it was doing. Many people call that "coming back" because their going forward and improving.

My point is the race of the city's leaders have noting to do with its condition. Stupid people make stupid decisions regardless of race, creed, culture, etc..
