I should state first and foremost that this isn't a rumor that I know of, just some food for thought.

The idea doesn't seem completely ludicrous, does it? What with their past presence in the city and recent trend of companies moving jobs back downtown. I'm thinking about the potential of a signature tower they could build in the CBD, Midtown, or New Center as a headquarters.... although taking up some of the vacant office space is a possibility as well. They may not be in a position to relocate at this moment, but I'm thinking more long-term as the city continues its renaissance.

What do native Detroiters think? Is there any chance Ford will reverse their mid-90s decision to flee to the suburbs, at least in some capacity? I've wondered the same thing re: Sears ever coming back to Chicago, it's exciting to think about but I'm not sure how feasible it is.

If you mean headquarters, no. Definitely not. Ford has been headquartered in Dearborn since at least 1928, although they were based in Detroit in 1903. I see no liklihood they will move from Dearborn now. Who knows? They might open some offices in the City like Chrysler did so they can market "Made in Detroit" if they want to. Crysler got ridiculed for their Emminem ads becasue they have no presences in the City of Detroit at all. To avoid being harrangued on the credibility of their advertising, they opened some offices in Detroit and Margiano or whatever his name is drops in once in a while. Ford does not really market the Detroit thing, so it does not seem likely they will have a need to lease office space downtown.

Ford did lease some office space in the Ren Cen to make the building more viable, but it was never their headquarters. Gm moved in in 1996 and bought the building in 2008, so it seems unlikely for will return to the ren Cen. Maybe ford cna take over the Fisher building.

No way.

Ford owns much of the land they're located on in Dearborn. From a purely business standpoint, it wouldn't make sense to abandon land you own for a lease.

Ford is definitely heavily involved in Detroit's affairs though.

No. Will never happen. Detroit has a city income tax and Dearborn does not.

Minor correction for the OP: Chrysler left the ghetto in the 90s, not Ford. Chrysler was headquartered in Highland Park, a city nearly completely surrounded by Detrot, and left for Auburn Hills. GM is headquartered in Detroit but has a significant number of white-collar workers in the suburbs as well.

What are you talking about? Ford never "fled" Detroit. Their main headquarters, R&D facilities and biggest factory have always been in Dearborn.

I thought it was 1982-1985ish that Chrysler left Highland Park for Auburn Hills?

And that's also true about GM, mostly at the Warren Technical Center.

I think he means Highland Park, which some people default as Detroit since it's completely surrounded by the city.

That's not the reason why.

If that were true, there wouldn't be tons of companies located in New York City (which has an even higher city income tax) and Chicago (which has a high sales tax).

As I said before, Ford owns much of the land in Dearborn, from its HQ to Fairlane to The Henry Ford. It's their playground to do whatever they want with. That's the reason they won't be leaving Dearborn any time soon.

How many other cities are within Detroit? I didn't know about Highland Park. I've also heard that Hamtramck is another.
