This summer there's supposed to be a lot of construction along I-94 so it'll probably be a bit slower than usual. It'll actually be easier just to take the surface streets through Detroit into downtown.

Do you mean compared to the stretch of 75 that's south of 94? Because you can only get to 75 from I-94 or the surface streets if you're coming from Grosse Pointe.

It's an easy 15 minute commute on 94. Getting from wherever you are in GP to the freeway will likely take longer (due to traffic lights etc).

When I was going east on 94 at 6:30 am, there seemed to be a pile of cars going east. The same in teh afternoon when I was heading west at 4:30 pm, the east bound always seemed to be bumper to bumper ---between the Lodge and Conner anyway.

Yes.

You'll be stopping and going the whole way on I-94 form donwtown to the east side.

Quite a few people I work with live in Grosse Pointe. Our off ice is in the ren cen. Most to the GP residents take surface streets more often than not. They say it is just about as fast and you do not get stuck in traffic jams. If there is a problem, you go around on other streets as opposed to getting stuck away form an exit and having to sit and sit.

I can see some truth in that.

Warren and Forest tend to have a steady flow of traffic in and out of downtown during rush, and also Vernor. Gratiot is bumper to bumper too coming in and out of Macomb County.

That said, some of them still prefer NOT to take the surcface simply because they perceive driving through Detroit's neighborhoods as unsafe.

I used to take Warren or Vernor to 94 in the morning (lived in the cabbage patch at the time). I would take 10/15m to get to 94 and then another 20 or so through to Dearborn where I worked at the time. If I worked downtown I would just take all surface streets, Jefferson is great and it there is any accident etc. it's very easy to jump over to another side street (Larned for example).

The only other thing I can think about is that occasionally 94 will flood east of 75, around Mt. Elliott, IIRC. There has to be a lot of rain for that to happen, though. For some reason 94 doesn't ice up as quickly as other SE MI freeways, proximity to Lake St. Clair, perhaps. Listening to the traffic radio in the morning, 275 and 23 can be solid ice and I'm doing 60 on 94.
