I saw the first picture comparison and was thinking that it looked like things were improving. Then I saw the rest of the pictures and was like .

I can say that the Woodward corridor has improved significantly since I left in 2008. I remember going downtown to watch the Pistons' victory parade and was baffled by how terrible Woodward looked. Almost all the buildings were boarded up. Last time I went down there, last summer, there were all sorts of shops downtown and new construction.

That first picture is deceptive. More than likely, scrappers have gotten ahold to the house on the left (note the busted window at the top left wasn't there before).

That was one of the very first things that I noticed.

What people fail to realize is that although the downtown and midtown areas of Detroit have been improving since the 1990's, the other 100 some square miles of the city continue to experience depopulation and expanding blight. Those pictures do not surprise me at all.

No offense but it's not going to be much of a "debate" if the neighborhoods are "getting better." Downtown is improving, definitely. The neighborhoods are not and will not be, as the city has lost 250,000 people since 2000, and has lost more than 1.1 million people since its peak in 1950.

There is no math where that adds up to fewer dilapidated or abandoned properties.

i don't know if anyone else noticed, but even though these houses are still all broken up, and probably filled with squatters.. at least they're still taking out the trash!
