I came across this USA Today article:

Washington is most bike-friendly state for sixth year

I was shocked to see MI at number 12. That's pretty impressive. I just moved back from CO, ranked #2, and I have come to appreciate the cycling culture. I think with the Detroit Metro area reinventing itself so to speak, they could really boost the cycling culture in this region. I look at states like MN or OR, and I think there is no reason why MI cannot join those states. Our weather is just as good as their's, if not better. And I think that incorporating more bike lanes and bike paths is a relatively cheap method of boosting the city's image to young, active professionals looking for a place to settle. I've been riding around the northern suburbs the past couple weeks and, for the most part, drivers around here respect cyclists. However, I would like to see more dedicated bike lanes and paths built around the city, ultimately making it easier to commute around the region by bike.

As the article mentions: Delaware governor Jack Markell, a cyclist himself, says his state focuses on cycling because it brings employment. "Jobs are going to go where the talent is, and talented people are going to work in places where they want to live, and having amenities for bicycling is a very attractive thing."

So what do you say Metro Detroiters? Let's make this one of the top cycling regions in the country.

I agree, in fact I made a post in the hobbies section asking about a bike. I plan to commute to school (9 miles away) via the sidewalk. It'd be nice if there were bike lanes, but I'm not picky.

That's cool. I noticed there are some dedicated lanes in Downtown Detroit, too. It'd be cool to be able to ride over to Canada as well.

Yea there is the Riverwalk and the Dequindre Cut which I believe are now connected by some newly constructed bike lanes stretching about 16 miles. 16-mile bike lane connects Detroit neighborhoods - Travel - Destination Travel - US and Canada | NBC News

I think it would be a great idea to connect the Detroit bike lanes to Windsor.

Anyone know if you can ride across the bridge or through the tunnel?
