Hi,

I am planning to sell my car to an individual in Detroit Metro area (Warren, MI) tomorrow. I would like know what things I need to do to make sure that the car gets transferred to the buyer and I don't have any liabilities after the sale.

Please let me know steps/procedures for this or the steps you took during the sale of your vehicle.

Thanks in advance.

Meet the prospective buyer in the parking lot of a Secretary of State office, accept only cash, and transfer Title to the vehicle in the SoS Office before either of you leaves the premises.

Thanks for the quick response.

Any recommendation on what I should keep for my record other than witness title transfer process at SoS?

Once the title transfer goes through, you don't really need any record. You can make up a receipt that you can have a copy of. If the title is in the buyers name, you're clear.

I think you're being overly paraonoid. I've sold plenty of my old cars to individuals.

As long as you take the license plate off your car, and make a copy of the signed title with a pic of his drivers license - there's no reason to meet in public, go to a Sec of State etc.

I understand if I you have sold plenty of old cars. But this is my first car sale. So I am not paranoid but cautious.

The point was that your cautiousness is unfounded. If you have evidential support you've sold something to someone (it can be on a napkin) - that creates a legally binding contract. But your best bet is to probably meet at a Sec of State to calm your fears. And make sure it's day light. And you leave a note stating where you went. And have a friend call in 20 minutes if they don't hear from you =)
