The thing I heard was the big hoopla was that the owner is originally from Metro Detroit, but for some reason purposely held off ever opening a store here.

Not just Metro Detroit, but Detroit proper.

The original incarnation of the Cheesecake Factory was also started by his parents in Detroit proper. He convinced them to move to Los Angeles and the rest was history.

He may have just heard about it because the date on this article does say "May 22nd" and MLive just wrote the article like they just heard about it themselves.
