I have read that certain types of Detroit businesses like convenience stores and liquor stores are disproportionately owned by immigrants from the Middle East and their descendants, who often live in Dearborn or some other suburb. Does this sometimes cause resentment among the city's population at large?

No - thankfully up here we don't judge people based on the color of their skin, but on the content of their character.

It did years ago (70's). Now the crime is so bad, they are the only ones that have the guts to open and/or operate a business in the city of Detroit. The ones that haven't been murdered yet anyway. It's a very dangerous occupation. Even though they have protective glass protecting them, the criminals come up with creative ways to get them out from behind it. When they protect themselves by shooting one, the neighborhood starts protesting them and gets the local news to cover it. I sure as heck wouldn't own a business in Detroit, unless it was a safer area of the downtown area and probably not even then.

I think that Jews were the principal "middleman minority" in Detroit's black neighborhoods until most of them left after the 1967 riot.

uh no, if thats the case tell all of the black, hispanic, asian and white business owners in Detroit that smh

to the OP no, the average black person just doesn't strive to open a liquor store. No one really thinks about that

It's not just in the city, it's quite common in the suburbs as well.

The majority of party stores and gas stations are owned by Middle Easterners. Same as here in the suburbs.

Party Store: the Michigan equivalent of a liquor store; stocks everything you need for a party. Liquor, beer, soda (we call it pop) chips, dips, condons, fireworks, smokes of all sorts, coolers, spark plugs, milk, peanut butter, toilet paper......

when you don't want to make a grocery store run for only 2 items, and you want to park outside the door....
Oh! national equivalent is 7-11.
