We have southern roots, but I've been to the South a few times and we're just about as different as west coasters from east coasters.

Detroit is a southern city in spirit. Some may argue that Detroit is the northern-most southern city in the U.S.

Are we talking about blacks or whites or both? Most blacks came from the south just within the past few generations, so they may still be a bit southern. Most whites did not come from the south. However some did. Areas they settled in are sometimes given the suffix -tucky.

Many southern people did move here to Detroit from the deep south. So Detroit does have a very strong AA culture, but southern culture? I don't see it. Detroit does have some very good food though, alot of it could probably compete with the south.

The way we talk, while it may be country compared to the east coast isn't anywhere near as country as Chicago and St. Louis (and Benton Harbor, MI) accents.

The way we dress, I've been everywhere but the eastcoast and see hardly any difference in the way people in Detroit dress compared to other cities. The swagger may be slightly different but not anything considered "southern".

Family reunions, do they do things differently in the east coast?

Culturally Detroit and Atlanta are VERY similar, alot of it has to do with the fact that many Detroiters moved down there recently and completely changed the culture of young blacks in Atlanta. That is the only thing I can think of.

I have never heard anyone say anything like that.

in west Michigan, judging by what's on the airwaves, piped into shopping malls, restaurants, etc, the music of choice seems to be country - specifically Nashville.

The only southern thang I see in Detroit and surrounding areas are the Bars and Stars being flown by wanna be red-neck crackers.
I can't even find decent BBQ that is authentic southern pork.

Typical with the Midwest because a lot of Southerners moved to the Midwest during the Great Migration. They say the same about Chicago and Cleveland. Don't pay them any mind.

Plus people the East Coast consider everything that isn't the Northeast country.
