I am currently considering renting out a apartment at Muiwoods Apartments. However, it is about 30 minutes away from where I will be working which is 300 River Place Drive. Is there any similar rental communities which might be closer?

Somewhere maybe East?

Gated communities are uncommon in SE MI, either to own or rent. There is one in Clinton Township across from Chippewa Valley HS and one or two in Harrison Township along Lake St. Clair, but those are no closer. There are nice apartments in St. Clair Shores, also along Lake St. Clair which may be gated, though I am not sure. Shore Club at 9 Mile and Jefferson (a straight shot commute to River Place via Jefferson, though it takes you through bad areas and isn't short in terms of mileage) claims to be gated according to the website and it's a nice place in a pretty peaceful area.

It sounds like you're moving for a job at the newly opened Patent Office. Muirwood is perfectly fine - albeit Farmington Hills is as boring a town as they come - and most of your coworkers will be living much closer - but you may as well just lock down the place and stop stressing yourself out. It seems you're purposely isolating yourself from where the young professionals live - but to each their own.

Yea gated communities are only a recent thing here and most will be outside of a 30 minute commute. Harbortown is gated, I think, and it's only a few blocks over from where you'll work, but that's about the only gated community I can think of that's within or close to the city.

I know lots of gated communities in Metro Detroit, though they're often upscale condo homes in the Bloomfield area. I can't think of a single gated rental complex.

In my opinion if you are looking in Farmington Hills there are nicer apartments then those but that depends on your budget. I have not lived in those apartments but I have heard some not so great things. Also in that area you really don't need a gated community. Overall it is safe. Also unless it is guard gated the arm gate really seem useless to me.

It's Macomb County, so it's not fashionable (but it's not a dump, either). St. Clair Shores is pretty peaceful, nice middle America kind of place. Has aged a lot more gracefully than other cities in its age range. Apartment complex is located on the "Nautical Mile," which has a bit of nightlife and some boating-themed stuff. Grosse Pointe Shores (the nicest Grosse Pointe overall) is right down the street. Some shopping is convenient, though if you want anything nicer than K Mart or a decent supermarket there is certainly a drive involved. (The closest movie theatres are also quite a distance away.)

Lots of homes, condos and apartments in Novi, Farmington Hills, West bloomfield and Northville. All consider safe buy a lot of people, but yet are gated like you live in the ghetto or something.

How about a nice apartment complex/townhouse/condo complex with a individual enclosed garage in the Royal Oak/Birmingham area ? That I guess would also suffice. I would consider a house but I do not feel like hiring landscapers, dealing with snow shoveling, etc.
