Hamtramck has it right - build the wall!

In modern times we see the 'Israeli West Bank barrier' works to keep the Israeli's safe and interest rates low VS the Palestinians who seem to be unsafe and lacking a banking system.

A 'Hamtramck barrier' would just work.

I think driving out more business is the last thing Detroit needs to do.

If the businesses are committed to Detroit, they can take the same hit employees and residents take.

Businesses are committed to making a profit, which is why they are a business. The greater the cost of business to them for operating in a specific area, the greater the incentive is for them to move.

If a business is failing, they don't continue to operate and lose money. They tighten the reins, layoff staff and try to stop the negative money flow. If they can't turn around, they close. At this point, the City has to start operating like the business it is.

There is a tremendous interest in this issue here in CA. Although of late, our state finances have improved, and a few cities' ones have as well, there are myriad cities here with similar structural issues that will only get worse as the pension tsunami hits. Now that the big D has set the precedent here ... hmmmmm!

Detroit has put out requests for privatization of garbage collection. The city will be divided into 4 collections areas which means it's possible to have multiple haulers. The city is also offering to sell its entire fleet of trucks.
