We need to counter this kind of crap with a kind of "Pure Michigan. . .Detroit Strong" kind of campaign. Kind of a grass roots, "get in on the ground floor" sort of thing. The train is in the station, gathering steam, getting ready to pull out: so get on board".

Let's brainstorm on what's right with Detroit, and, yes, there are many things right with Detroit. Everyone: just add an item or two to this thread about good things and we'll compile the list. . .

1. Lots of potentially open space to develop quality housing, near the vibrant downtown and waterfront.

next?

I hear crickets chirping. You need an economy to sustain housing.

Default Good!

Thanks, Prove! So true. So, what employers or businesses or industries are near the center of the core of the city?

Do you have a brainstormed "positive" bullet point about the city for bullet number two? I know you must. . .

I've seen quite a few people posting on here that they're taking a job in the city. What are those jobs?

I've also heard of some cities working to create clusters of housing for teachers/educators/ etc. where (as part of their compensation) get lower rents or some sort of credits to buy houses. Maybe possible to build an area of educators/police/fire/ village kind of thing to entice residency? You know, sort of reverse the "flight"?

Default Thanks again, Prove!

I've summarized the list. The bullets as a whole are huge, but taken in smaller chunks--bullet by bullet--can be broken down and worked. For each of the bullets, let's all chip in and try to enumerate the positives Detroit has going for it.
  • Agriculture and Food Systems
  • Fisheries
  • Forestry and Wood Products
  • Manufacturing and Industry
  • Small Business
  • Technology
  • Economics and Finance
  • Urban/Rural Economic Ties
As far as, say, Agriculture and Food Systems, as well as Forestry and Wood Products, Detroit has/or can have/ fairly large swaths of land which can be converted for both. Take some of the outlying areas from the core of the city, and plant trees. Then, maybe create or use existing boulevards and focus on making them tree-lined. It is a known fact that trees enhance property values and can be quantified in pure $$$$ in benefit. I can provide links if needed, but trust me on this. Planting and maintaining trees can provide jobs.

Then, maybe closer in, allow farms to take up root. Perhaps even closer in, Farmer's markets can setup with little infrastructure to provide fresh fruits and veggies.

2. affordable cost of living

It should be started in a new thread though so this thread can die.

The primary problem is we as Americans don't produce much anymore. Consumer spending is 70% of our economy.
Outsourcing (China, Taiwan) and automation is the new normal.
With a global economy how do we ever go back?

Have started a new thread for this. C'mon people. Let's roll up our sleeves and see what we can do. I'd like to retire and move back to Detroit someday. If it appears as though the ship may be headed in the right direction, we might be able to gain momentum!

The main problem with the global economy and jobs is slave wages and lax regulation, which American corporations love. There are a few hints of that changing, but more changes will come only when foreign workers in places like Bangladesh get fed up with their own situation and start making demands for improved working conditions and wages.
America will always need manufactured goods, so we should encourage doing it here, for instance by repealing legislation which rewards corporations for outsourcing - all this "levelling the field". Detroit could be doing lots of production.
