Both are already open. I think today was the grand opening of the Meijer. The Whole Foods looks beautiful in the Midtown neighborhood.

When it's easier to list the good things than the bad, you know you have a problem.

Detroit has great architecture, especially its Art Deco high-rises and Victorian homes (though unfortunately many of the latter have been abandoned). They also have a very good baseball team (which is going down to the A's this year).

We have lived in Ohio for six months. Always wanted to visit Detroit - the place where my parents cars - and one of my current ones came from, home of Motown - "Hitsville", and all of these Art Deco buildings - I'm a fool for Art Deco.

Where to visit? Stay a night and be safe? Can't say it's not a concern, but I don't let fear limit my life. Still, I want to keep my family safe.

Any suggestions?

The danger is in the neighborhoods. Detroit relies on a healthy convention business. I might recommend an organized tour.

Searching "detroit tours" there seems to be plenty more than this.

Well, you don't hear people from popular areas ask "Can someone please come up with something good to say about us?"

A lot of negative you read and hear about is (social) media hype. People that actually spend time in the city from time to time realize that there are a lot of bright spots in the city (Midtown, Corktown, Campus Martius, the Riverwalk, the Dequindre Cut, the new Whole Foods, the new Meijer, the proposed Red Wings arena, Belle Isle, the Casinos, Greektown, Ford Field, Comerica Park, DIA, Fox Theater, New Center, UD-Mercy, Wayne State, up-and-coming Woodward and Cass Corridors, Hart Plaza, etc.). This is an anonymous Internet forum. People get their rocks off by complaining or venting because they don't have to be held accountable in real life. That said, it's probably not the best source of information regarding, well, anything. IMO, the city really has no where else to go but up.

Default I just wanted to start the conversation. . .

. . . about good things. It's too easy to list the bad things, even if you're from other parts of the country, because that's all you hear about on news, etc.

We have amassed so far, a huge list of good things about Detroit. If SOMEONE from the visitors and convention bureau would sit down and compile what's been written in this thread so far, post it to a map, then visit these things and work on a common way to "sell" them, then you might be able to attract tourists.

Also, someone from the real estate sector, should start compiling lists of available buildings near some of these venues that are "ready for occupancy", or "can get funds to rehab", you might start getting some momentum going.

See, the thing to do is to stop people from moving out of Detroit, or driving out of the city to work, and actually reverse the flow. Commuting downtown during the 60's and 70's was tough. Now, you could probably go in that direction with virtually no traffic!

My god, people. Stop fighting and start brainstorming. Accentuate the positive, work on eliminating the negative.

I hear a lot of good things in this thread. Heck, I was born and raised in Detroit and many of these things are new to me! Love it!

This right here is a fact. You don't (re)build a city by scaring people away from it. Sales/Marketing 101.

People have argued that the city does a good job by itself at scaring people away due to the perception that it's not safe. Well, the United States did not discover and build itself either. It started with a few brave explorers...

Maybe that's just what Detroit needs; a few brave explorers.
