You might want to ride on the side streets instead of the sidewalks along main roads. That will keep you away from the drunks coming home from the bar hopefully, or at least give you enough time to get on the sidewalk before they pass (I'd do this for any car actually).

Those fluorescent vests that road workers wear are very visible at night. You could wear it over your work clothes. Not sure where they sell them though.

I bought mine at one of the home improvement superstores, in the same area where they sell safety glasses.

Warren has its shady parts especially if you get closer towards Detroit. I wouldn't venture too far away from main roads or well populated areas.
