lol don't like Grand Rapids much do you?
Alot of people in West MI think GR is much more important than it really is. That's what happens when it's the only place in that entire half the state that has a little taste of a city. Now that it has a 1 Million+ metro area some think it's some sort of major power player or something. Some are even delusional enough to think it can compete with the Detroit area, then reality sets in. They complain about Detroit dragging MI down, ect but in all honesty, Detroit is what made MI as important as it is today, GR does have a decent sized metro area but the reason the city is not well known is more than likely because it's overshadowed by Detroit (a much larger and well known place). That may be another reason some of the people there talk alot of crap about Detroit.

jonnynonos: What are you getting so upset about? He's just saying what he thinks about the Midtown area. No one but you keeps comparing it to Chicago. It's not Chicago... WE GET IT.
exactly! smh

Grand Rapids is a joke. Hell MI as a whole is. Contrary to belief no one outside of MI gives two .... about GR, Traverse city, Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak etc

Still no response from the OP.

Yet we're going on 5 pages arguing among ourselves. Aren't you looking forward to this OP?

I'm actually moving to Detroit soon because of my job and everyone I know keeps trying to convince me to live in the suburbs.

No thanks. I'm actually getting an apartment in an awesome high rise near the river downtown. I work in the city, I will live in the city. I have no interest to live in the suburbs. What I find funny is that so many people work in the city but refuse to live there, I think that's awful.

I'd say its something that you have to gauge. I'm from west michigan and have never lived a city life before. I commute to downtown detroit and I'm in love with downtown right now. I suppose its because I'm from a small town, but I just love the city atmosphere. I've been at my new job about a month and I've already discovered so much to do, so many new restaurants, bars, etc. I'm excited about my move to downtown. I refused to listen to my friends in burbs. I think its sad the amount of disdain they have for detroit. I'm excited about being a part of detroit's comeback (which I believe will/is happening).

No one mentioned the North West pocket of Detroit. Check out Sherwood Forest, Palmer Woods, University District, and Greenacres. They're older neighborhoods that feature turn of the century all brick homes (which isn't something that you will easily find in the suburbs as most are frame homes) and its very community oriented. You'll know your neighbors and feel safe walking at night. The biggest perk is that you're not to far from the "youthful" "burbs" (Ferndale, Royal Oak, Brimingham), the major highways (75, 696, and Lodge), and you're a quick commute downtown (I would say 15 minutes, if that).

Take a look around and try to ignore the snarky posts. Find what is right you and your family. Also, welcome to Michigan!

I can name you plenty, cookie. And refer you to some great restaurants and music spots.
I have lived In and out of the city limits.

to each their own. I did my urban pioneering in the 70-80's. Everyone needs to find their own comfort spot without all the border ahting.

This is the challenge with Detroit. Suburbs have been the desirable living area for the last fifty years. Detroit needs to accept the new normal and plan around how to make it work. If Detroit refuses to do that, it may continue this long decline. For the first time in 50 years, people are moving back into the cities. They just aren't doing it in Detroit.

You don't have to love the mindset that drives people to live in the suburbs, but hating them won't bring them back to the city. I'm sorry for what you've lost, and I'll avoid this thread since I expect the response will be an attack. Best of luck to you, I truly hope Detroit can shift course and recover.

Exactly, no wiser words have been said to explain the situation. Detroiters are welcomed by the suburbs with open arms and suburbanites are treated with disgust by Detroiters.

If anything, I find most people from Chicagoland to be proud of Chicago. It's the complete opposite with Detroit. The average suburban Detroiters couldn't even tell you what the tallest building is in Detroit.
To be fair, GM was considering moving to North Carolina and that is when Warren stepped in and suggested they move their headquarters onto their tech center in Warren. If the options are Warren or North Carolina, the answer should be easy. It's also ironic that since then, Detroit has poached Campbell-Ewald from Warren.
