With the old cities especially in the Eastern and Midwest parts of the country, the city limits are well within the actual city but when you get out West, city limits may be miles past the edge of the furthest out suburbs and include fairly large still rural areas.

That means Detroit gets mainly the statistics of it's inner city but not it's suburbs which are technically past the city limits while other cities include the residents of the suburbs which are still inside city limits. Even though -- those cities may have a fairly high ratio of crime in their central neighborhoods, they benefit by including the population and statistics of their further flung neighborhoods.

Oakland county was the 4th wealthiest county in the country for a long time, but I'm not sure about that now. It would definitely be the wealthiest in the state. I agree, if a report looked at the entire metro Detroit would not get as much negative press.

Stop scaring people. Detroit is a nice place to visit & live!

Remember the old 60's PR campaign "Say Nice Things About Detroit?" May be we should practice that now...perception is reality.

If I wasnt a resident of Michigan, hearing Detroit is the most dangerous city... if I was to go there I would think I would drop dead when I'm in the heartland of the city. Let alone I'm half scared about entering that city now. I'm sure this is a topic many Detroit residents wouldnt like to talk about... but for Michigan to contain so many of the top dangerous cities :L then the capital city be in the top also
I'm so disappointed in Lansing being in the top 150 for dangerous cities, so disappointed.

Plus Lansing is the capital city, it needs a renavation... makeover, Grand Rapids is a nice example of a decent dowtown.

The Associated Press: Detroit Declared Most Dangerous US City
Everyone knows, though, that Detroit is a dangerous city. Not all parts of it, but most. Didn't Flint rank #3 also? Wow... MI has two of the top 5 most dangerous cities in the nation. I'm glad I'm from Romulus. It only holds the metro airport...that's all. Nowhere near Flint or Detroit. \

I am not sure why so many were shocked we made the number 1 spot on the list. I agree, Detroit is a dangerous city. But anytime the economy is terrible, crime goes up. I have seen crime go up in the burbs. I live a skip away from the Detroit border. Lots more robberies etc. Then we got a "gangster" running the city on top of it.

I know there are poor in every race ...i am white and grew up poor too....but i wanted to know if Detroit has neighborhoods that are majority poor white people but not that high crime and if it has areas that are majority black poor people and not much crime either.....i just ask this because people say that it doesn't matter about race because crime goes up when there are more poop people around.....so is there poor white areas up there where you see lots of violent crimes?

if you compare st. louis to detroit, i would say st. louis is worse.. i know detroit was ranked the most dangerous. but st. louis a ton of neighbor hoods full of destroyed houses and open lots just like Detroit. i think st. louis might have a few more, because the population there has droped quite a bit, and alot more than detroit, considering that they have around 300,000 people, and Detroit is around 800,000. But with Detroits mayor Kwane Kilpatrick, things might go better sooner or later, he can only do so many things at once, i imagine its really hard. the compuware headquartes are in downtown, and that should give some more jobs, and im sure that more jobs will open up in detroit. it will eventually be a litle bit safer at a time, and have as many jobs as it should. this place isnt as bad as people say it is, alot of that is poor judgement. its named motor city, and motown, those names will never get old.
i think of how high the poverty rates and unemployment are in detroit. its a really sad thing. i lived in the suburbs in oakland county, and that place was so wealthy, so rich, i couldnt imagine that detroit was so poor. ive only been to downtown around comerica park when i went to a tigers game, and riding on woodward, thats all of detroit that i remember, so i didnt see all the neighborhoods that got abandoned that people are talking about. if detroit gets a few more company headquarters, then it could start being a good place to live.

I can say thankfully, that growing up in the Downriver area (south burbs along the river) I didnt see violent crime. However, a week ago there was a shooting at a coney island by my home. I was coming home with groceries, thinking about my Thanksgiving dinner I was going to cook in a couple of days, when my neighbor told me I should prolly get in the house cuss the shooter was still on the loose. It really upset me. Turns out it was a domestic type situation but none the less that sort of thing is going up around here. People will say, well that stuff happens everywhere, which is true but it also happens in more areas than others.

Southwest Detroit still has pockets of white families trying to hang on cuss its where they grew up. A woman I know still lives in Southwest Detroit. Her truck got stolen and she knew who stole it (someone in the neighborhood) so she stole it back. She hid her own truck for a few days till everything settled down. How crazy is that?

I cant speak for St. Louis because I have never been there. Detroit used to be called the Murder Capitol in the 80's. I also read that a million people have left Detroit since 1962. Thats a lot of people! We have a very large diverse population here in Detroit. It could be a great place for the arts with so many different cultures. Detroit is broke and has been for many years. The mayor has been involved in all sorts of scandals since his election (twice) and the corruption will continue till people get tired of it. The casinos could have been a good thing but they are spread out in Detroit and its basically go to one casino or another, park in the structure and dont walk around the area. I think maybe if they could have built them on the water front, it might have had more of an impact.

We went to the Thanksgiving Parade and I felt safe. I always have in the downtown area, which isnt that large really. I have worked downtown for a few yrs and the homeless and pan handlers would bug you on occasion. We had a crazy guy walk up to us when we headed back to our car after the parade was over with. Bascially dont make eye contact and keep walking. Get back in your car and know your route back to I-75.
