It's a very dangerous city and there are alot of bad neighborhoods. Unfortunately, yes, there are good people in Detroit. The unfortunate part is that those good people are probably there because they can't afford to leave.

I wouldn't say the rest of the people are criminals though. I'd like to use the word lazy but that's not exactly what I think would be the best description. Alot of Detroit is inner city, so alot of people had it rough growing up. Alot of Detroiters never finished high school, many who did never went to college. They never made an effort to 'get out of the ghetto'. They stay in Detroit because that's all they can afford. Alot don't maintain their properties and live in fear of the criminals around them. Hence why they have burglar doors on alot of the houses in Detroit.

The media does degrade the city though. It is a very dangerous city, there are many bad neighborhoods, and the amount of vacant homes is uncalled for. But people still live in Detroit. They still work in Detroit, go to school in Detroit, and focus their lives around Detroit. It's still a major American city with a large population. The difference is that the city's population is much more spread out. It's not some third world war zone. It's not abandoned from neighborhood to neighborhood.

I would not recommend living in [the city of] Detroit. There are many, many safer places. But the media portrays it in a much more exaggerated way than it is. Yellow Journalism. Detroit is an easy target because it is infact a city made up of a series of ghettos and very few middle class neighborhoods, but that's all it is.

C'mon, JS, you must know that this part of your statement isn't the whole truth.

There are tens of thousands of people living in Detroit by choice, myself included. If I was looking for affordability, there's definitely cheaper places in other cities and in the Detroit suburbs, but I'm not interested. I like being a Detroiter.

I live in Birmingham and enjoy visiting Detroit on the weekends. Once you pass Ferndale it gets rough.. but there are safe areas downtown. I love Greektown, the casinos, and the DIA.

If you met someone from Detroit outside of Detroit, that could skew your experience. I'd say most of the people in Detroit can't afford to go anywhere else to travel. Of course there are good people in Detroit, but they are trapped. It only takes a few people to run a gang, and unfortunately as we learn from the Middle East it doesn't matter if you kill people or do other dangerous illegal things, as long as you provide a modicum of safety or other services to your neighbors they'll ignore your illegalities out of fear or reliance.

You can blame Detroit's own local media for the negative perception it get's from the national media. If you polled people nationwide as to what major city has been the most deadliest per capita wise on average over the last 20 years, Detroit would poll at least 50% or more. But the fact is Detroit hasn't posted the highest per capita murder rate in any single year over the last 20 years. The Detroit media however still views the annual most dangerous city list and the city with the highest murder rate as one in the same which has been picked up by the national media. It's like they want to be the murder capital or something since they've been promoting it even though it hasn't been since 1987

I disagree with Aceter. Whenever I've seen a local news media report any ranking of Detroit on any crime list, they always show exactly where Detroit ranks on those lists and never have misled me into believing that Detroit was at the top of a list when it wasn't.

I guess you haven't noticed that those rankings never list cities' actual per capita murder rates, why, because it's based on 6 different crime categories. It's like comparing watermelons (murder) to grapes (burglary). Also, if the only year Detroit clocked a higher per capita murder rate as D.C. between 1988 and 2003 was in 2001, and the only 2 yrs Detroit clocked a higher per capita as New Orleans between 1990 and 2009 was 1992 and 1999, when was the last time Detroit led major cities in per capita murder rate?

If you can give an example where the local media have said that Detroit had the highest murder rate when in fact it hadn't, you'd prove your point. Let's talk about a specific example. Take this Wikipedia listing: United States cities by crime rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Detroit is second in murders to New Orleans and tied with St. Louis. And in total violent crimes is second only to St. Louis. I consider that pretty darn bad! May not be "the worst", but we should feel relieved.
