Hello,

We are moving from West Michigan to the east side. My contract job will be in Plymouth, my husband's new job is in Auburn Hills. I work part time (6 hours a day from 8-3 PM, 5 days a week). We are planning to buy a house. If it matters, we are Indians, so would be nice to be in an area where there are Indian communities. We have a kindergartner and a 1.5 year old, so school district is very important to us.

From a commute perspective where would it make the most sense for us to live?

Thanks in avance!

Other than the obvious (somewhere in between the two), I can't help much because I don't travel in that area.

But I did find a map that shows where Indians are living in the metro area. Sorry that I can't figure out how to post just the map, but if you go to page 17 on this link it will show you.

That is a difficult split to accomodate, tossing in an Indian community complicates it even further.

Troy would be the obvious choice, but it is a very ugly commute to Plymouth.
Canton is the same, but the commute to Auburn Hills is down right crazy.

Based on the data, it looks like Novi or Farmington Hills are the most logical choices for a smooth commute to Auburn and / or Plymouth. Both have very good schools.

That's not really east side...

Anyway, yeah, if you are trying to split the commute, I would say Farmington Hills, Franklin, Beverly Hills.

I would say Bloomfield but at that point the person commuting to Plymouth looks like they would be getting the short end of the commute stick.

I'm not familiar with the commute to Auburn Hills, but in traffic from, say, Beverly Hills to Plymouth is doable, but it pretty much sucks. Google maps says 25 minutes but realistically in normal traffic you are probably looking at about 45.

I just point that out to underscore my next statement, which is since the commute is going to be rough either way, I might just live where you want (within reason!) regardless of the commute.

Not sure about Indians but I think there are a fair amount in Novi.

Just a heads up, since this is in the Detroit subforum, most people are going to think you mean the east side of city proper instead of the east side of Michigan.

Anyway, I'd reiterate that your best options are either Farmington Hills, Troy, or somewhere between these two cities. The area is pretty affluent and there tends to be a higher number of Indians, mostly in Troy and Bloomfield Hills.

I would say try Farmington Hills, Farmington City, West Bloomfield. The three are pretty much in between Plymouth and Auburn Hills. All three are also diverse. Schools are good and streets are safe. And as far as price goes, you can find homes for pretty much every budget in these the locales. Bloomfield Township, Beverly Hills and Franklin/Bingham Frms are also worth looking into if you want to spend a little bit more.

Are you "Indian" as in from the country India (desi)? I'm Indian as well. Metro Detroit has a lot of Indians. My family used to live in Rochester Hills which is next to where you will be working. It's a nice area with good schools. Now Plymouth is on the opposite side of metro Detroit, so I would recommend "splitting" the commute and locating in Farmington Hills, Novi, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills or Troy. Troy has a lot of Indians, and the biggest temple (Bharatiya mandir) in metro Detroit is located there. Fun fact: Dr. Sanjay Gupta attended Novi High School.

Some of the region's best schools are located in the vicinity of Bloomfield Hills/Troy. International Academy (consistently ranked one of the nation's top 10 high schools), Cranbrook (Mitt and Ann Romney's alma mater), and Country Day School (Steve Ballmer, Robin Williams, Chris Webber, all went there) are all in this area.

Yeah - I would definitely look at Farmington Hills or Novi.

Commuting from Troy, B'ham, Bloomfield to Plymouth would be a nightmare everyday in good conditions, unless you really, really really love being in a car. Even from B'ham/Bloomfield, you'd probably end up going through Woodward or Telegraph and those get packed during rush hour. Then to have to deal with the freeways.......it really matters where you live.

I would look around the 275/696 corridor area and West of Telegraph road.

Regardless of how things look on a map, Metro Detroit is really spread out and it's not easy in some spots to get from point "A" to point "B". There is no obvious route.
