Who was the best mayor of Detroit in its history? Here are a few commercials showing what kind of mayors they were or at least wanted to be.

Coleman A. Young

1989 Coleman Young for Mayor Commercials Detroit - YouTube

Kwame Kilpatrick

Kwame Kilpatrick for Mayor 2005 - YouTube

Dave Bing

2008 Dave Bing for Mayor of Detroit Commerical - YouTube

Mike Duggan

Mike Duggan Can Turn Around Detroit - YouTube

Personally, I must say that I love the Coleman A. Young, he was a political icon and his commercial is great mirroring the greatness of his person and politics. Young could be something out of a Hollywood movie from the 70s and 80s. I love the style with black-power rhetoric, bodyguards, expensive cars, gangster-connections, expensive suits and everything else around him. He was a mix of Jimmy Hoffa, Malcolm X and Frank Lucas. A great mayor indeed.

Question: Who was the best mayor of Detroit?

Hands down it has to be Kwame Kilpatrick.
Though I do appreciate Coleman's love of the Krugerrand...
I do believe Detroit has many other mayors prior to Coleman Young. Do they count?

Of course – All mayors from Solomon Sibley to Mike Duggan. I think Jerome Cavanagh was pretty cool. Detroit has really never had a long term mayor other than Coleman Young (1974-1994). Cavanagh (1962-1970) and Jeffries (1940-1948) come second with eight years. Right after them come Pingree (1890-1897), Cobo (1950-1957), Dennis Archer (1994-2001) and Maybury (1897-1904). Kilpatrick (2002-2008) did an impressive six years and it would be more if he didn’t end up in jail. Marx (1913-1918) and Mirani (1957-1962) did just five years. Clearly, one would associate Detroit with Coleman Young at least looking at time served. I love this propaganda film from Detroit - trying to sell Detroit for the Olympic Games in 1968. When it was broadcasted in 1965, the Detroitian population had had dropped around 200,000 people from 1950.

Clearly, Cavanagh (1962-1970), Coleman Young (1974-1994) and Kilpatrick (2002-2008) were all iconic for Detroit. Detroit is one of the few cities were you can expect that the mayor will end up serving a few in prison after he leaves office.

Mayor Archer help redevolped Downtown. Bringing Lions back downtown and getting the superbowl as well Comerica Park then the casinos and businesses. All this I would consider the foundation to where Detroit is now with its surge of comeback. That's why like him

Detroit has always had relatively crappy mayors.

If they weren't race baiters or crooks, they were corporate/wealthy kiss asses. The rest didn't do anything revolutionary to put the city on a path to good health.

Unfortunately, Detroit never had the opportunity to elect a Rudy Giuliani, Richard Daley or Maynard Jackson.
