Just venting my frustrations. I love the auto industry, my dream company is GM and they have never given me an interview--didn't recruit at my school which i suppose made it tougher for me. I WANT to go to Detroit and be apart of the revival there!

Not expecting anything of anyone, just venting my frustrations and trying to show you all that there is at least one young person who is dreaming of coming to Detroit--who would love to be apart of Detroit's comeback and contribute to what is going on there.

You know there are lots of other automakers and automotive suppliers here, right? Not to mention countless agencies, consultants and other businesses that work within the autos ecosystem.

I'm aware and have applied elsewhere yes--I understand how my post sounds. Just saying mentioning that GM is my dream firm. It's quite hard when you're out of college and these places don't recruit at your university. To get picked off the internet with no networking connections, I've learned you need to be a bit of a superstar. Automakers I'm aware of, parts makers I would be less interested in, consultancies that deal in the automotive realm I have totally ignored i'll admit. I figured those would be small and looking for people with long standing experience in the industry.

Have you investigated this? Entry-Level

Do you have a good GPA?

Major? If it's not engineering or accounting, you probably have to come up with some "hook" to stand out, probably in your "cover letter".

A lot of GM jobs, perhaps most, are not located in Detroit or close enough to commute. A lot of peripheral jobs such as parts manufacturing are located in the Detroit area. As others said, consider other car makers as well.

You have to start somewhere. What did you major in? What internships or experience do you have?

Many people get into the auto companies through a contract job. If they like your work, you may get hired in directly.

EDIT: I've decided to remove this because I think the first response made it clear I was not getting my message across properly

Paragraph one - you majored in finance.

Paragraph two - you want to be in product development.

Paragraph two - you want to me in marketing/brand management.

Paragraph three - self loathing/victim mentality towards life.

Reader/Interviewer - I'm just as confused about what you want to do as you are. Next.

PS - If you want to move to Detroit. Do that first. That doesn't score you points in an interview. Everyone is already here.

I think it's perfectly clear that I wrote that finance would be the best entry point somewhere and I could grow within the organization and yes perhaps move into other areas within a firm. You may see my outlook as a victim mentality while I see it as having a passion and making the best moves I could to be where I want to be. Hopefully, I can focus my message when I actually do get an interview and that won't be the outcome.

Thanks for the advice, but you don't have to be so snide.

1) "They" have never given me an interview

2) "They" didn't recruit at my school

3) "Others" warned you about going to work for X and the conservative advice.

We're all here to help you - I was objectively pointing out your mentality wasn't these are the 5 reasons GM should hire you - but all the reasons why you didn't get a job at GM.

You want a job at GM. They are hiring. What are the 5 reasons they should hire you vs. Ahmed next door?
