Nah, we haven't had a low below 0F this season. Moscow has had three days with lows below 0F and two days with highs pretty close to 0F this month. Our winters are almost always warmer than Moscow's winters.

I wonder if you mistook the "wind chill" or "RealFeel" for the actual temperature. The media have been awful in this regard, quoting actual temperature average or records from days gone by versus current "gimmick" temperature indexes (always sound colder than the temperatures really are).

Another possibility is that you were listening to a Canadian station (-1.8°F = -20°C).

As for Detroit being colder than Moscow - on the whole, Detroit's climate is warmer, but it is not at all unusual for it to be warmer in Moscow than it is in Detroit, at a moment when it is warmer than average in Moscow and/or colder than average in Detroit.

Moscow's temperature averages, month by month, are almost exactly the averages in Marquette.

Now, this past Thursday (1/8/15), I checked the temperatures in Detroit and Novosibirsk (the largest city in Siberia), at 8:00 am (EST). Novosibirsk was 30 degrees warmer than Detroit! (31°F in Novosibirsk and 1°F in Detroit). Note that 8:00 EST is early morning cold in Detroit but heat of the afternoon in Novosibirsk.

It varies. Within the past month Detroit was warmed than Yuma AZ - one of the hottest places on earth. (Detroit was 39 and Yuma 37). One thing is certain - our weather is never boring.

In Michigan? It depends on the hour as usual.

I had a friend who went to college with me in MI and lived over 20 years in Moscow -- she said they were really about the same.

Moscow is hardly Russia's coldest spot, so I wouldn't use it as an out-of-the-ordinary cold bogey. Even St. Petersburg is colder and, given that it's humid, a much better comparator than Moscow for Detroit.

Personally, there's nothing for me to like about Michigan's weather, other than our three "summer" months. I like warm weather.

this
november through march just plain sucks...cold and wet followed by freezing and skin cracking dry, then cold and wet again...yay MI

april is a rainy warm/cold suckfest...

may, 3rd and 4th week we finally get a taste of what nice weather can be, if were lucky...iit can snow in may

june, if warm, is great...but weve had very chilly beginnings in june...end of april and beginning of june is our real spring...sometimes its wonderful, sometimes it goes from cold n wet to hot n muggy

july and august are hot muggy sweat fests with a few major thunderstorms and tornadoes thrown in

September is 2 weeks of hot n muggy, one week of wonderful fall awesomeness, and the last rainy week of cold f*** you coming winter

October can be nice, but tends to be rainy and the last 2 weeks are cold...they might call it fall but feels more like winter

I want mother nature fired...she sucks...and someone more organized to take charge
june through august = summer...
September through November = fall
December through February = winter
march through may = spring...
