Schools are a big part of it.

Other areas are simply more upscale. When a town gets branded upscale, the title becomes self fulfilling.

Newer may be part of it (which I do not understand). I would rather live in Farmington than in a sea of conformity subdivision, but everyone has their own opinions.

Farmington is a smidge rougher than say Novi or Northville. Hang out in downtown farmington at 2 a.m. to see what I am referring to.

Thanks, appreciate the insight. I've been to Downtown Farmington exactly once - to see Argo for three bucks. Zero interest in what happens there at 2 a.m. (except morbid curiosity, of course, but I'll settle for a story rather than a first-hand encounter) as long as it doesn't spill into where I live.

What have you seen in downtown Farmington at 2am, Coldjensens? Seriously. I have been there plenty of times and seen nothing alarming.

Do the 50-60 year old Cowley's patrons get rowdy in the streets after last call?

Probably has something to do with the fact that it is closer in proximity to the Detroit border (aka 8 Mile). As we all know, the newer, "hip" parts of Detroit aren't by 8 Mile, and are in fact by Downtown / Midtown, etc.

Farmington Brewing Company is very new... and it is gooood! Like Cowley's, a mixed crowd! Cowley's needs to diversify their menu.

Redneck teens cruising in pick up trucks hooting at women and insulting any men they see walking to their cars. General rowdy drunk teen or 20ish groups walking or in cars. Once an obvious drug deal (but those happen everywhere, usually just more discretely). I was surprised having grown up very near Farmington. Every time I have visited in the past several years at night was uncomfortable. (All of four times, but four out of four is enough to convince me it has gotten a bit crazy). This was always in the summer. I doubt it is like that in the winter.

I have spent dozens of late evenings there and have never seen any of these things! Having grown up in a rough community in another state, I have learned to be EXTREMELY observant. I find that post so very...weird.

Coldjensens, I thought you grew up in a rural area of South Lyon? That's not very near Farmington at all. I visit family there frequently.

And since you gave me another opening, the Basement Burger Bar is so very good.

Agreed. We have had nothing but a good experience living in Farmington and patronizing the downtown businesses. If you're interested in something new go try Rumi right next to Page's. My first introduction to Persian food. Excellent all around.
