95%, well at least 85% of the cites around Detroit are safe to safer--7 or 8 in a scale of 10. Beaware of commute times based on traffic flow and weather, not distance. If you are renting taxes will not be an issue but car insurance can be pricier in some cities than others.

I vote TROY or Farmington / Farmington Hills over Canton. Canton is an absolute cluster for traffic.

Ok. I will be commuting from Windsor though, so I guess I don't have any problem with residency location. I never been to Detroit, but I liked the Downtown view in pictures, and thought I could have a fun time while working there. But it seems I have to be a bit careful.

It may not be as free and fun as it used to be in New York downtown when I was working there, but it should ok I guess. Thanks!

But the whole city always gets ranked as the most dangerous in the US so people do not like to be taken there.

Anyway, as long as I stick around downtown, I guess it should be ok. Thanks!

Man, I saw the old Detroit videos in youtube and that city was fabulous. I wish Detroit gets back to those golden years soon. Thanks!
For an outsider, downtown will be your safest best for now, and yes most of the suburbs are completely safe. There are places on the east and west side that you will probably eventually want to go depending on what you like. The city is big, there are good and bad neighborhoods on both sides. Use common since and you will most likely be fine.

So you are saying there might be a correlation between quality of IT jobs and violent crime in American cities? Interesting. Why didn't you consider Oakland, it provides the same amenities as Detroit but is much closer to LA.

Oh right, I forgot I'm not supposed to address high crime in the city because you all live in the safe suburbs where you pretend the problems in the city don't exist.

Because, if you actually read, OP asked about downtown, so we addressed downtown. You didn't point out anything about the downtown area.
