All of Grosse Pointe is extremely status conscious. The uber-wealth is concentrated in the Shores.

Major turnoff for us. I'd like to be in a community where I can feel comfortable and relaxed, not feel that "keeping up with the Jones'" mentality (which is one of the reasons we're looking to get out of our area).

The pecking order:

Tier 1 (highest)- Shores
Tier 2 - Farms
Tier 3 - Pointe
Tier 5 - Parke

Sterling Heights, Troy or Livonia are the all American, not keeping up with the Jones, family raising towns.

Plymouth/Northville/Novi are west side $
Birmingham/Bloomfield/Rochester are north side $
Grosse Pointe/Washington Twp/Shelby are east side $
Grosse Isle is downriver $

Can someone tell me about the northern areas on the water? Specifically, the area along the water/I-94 between St. Clair Shores and New Baltimore? I don't see much about that area...

It's kind of an underdeveloped area, but there's a lot of marinas and houses with boat canals behind them. I guess the vibe could be described as that of a small town boating community. Quite a few subdivisions have older homes with sizable yards.

The Selfridge Airforce Base takes up a big chunk of the area and it's not unusual to see military planes flying in and out of it. Other than that, I'd say it's mostly a quiet area.

Once you get off the waterfront, it's mostly a lot of new construction housing and strip malls with no real character, especially the farther west you go. North and east is completely rural.

The commute is fairly decent, just under an hour. Most of the traffic you'd run into is south of 696 and coming into downtown Detroit.

Harrison Township is nice and it's close to Metro Beach Metropark (St Clair Metropark).

The area around Hall Rd (M59) and 94 (Macomb Twp) is a booming area as is Chesterfield.

As for Rochester, I'll let Madonna speak to it =)

Congrats on the move!
Madonna hasn't been in Rochester for 40 years. It is a lot different than when she lived there.
