The 7 mile & Conant area is pretty bad, I have a couple of friends in that area one is only a year younger than you. Actually I had a couple of chicks over in that area I mess with lol. But overall it is worse than when you guys left. The northeast side in general was one of the fastest declining areas of Detroit during the great recession. In the E 7 mile area, crime has gotten way out of control, the blight has gotten worse, and up until recently the street lights were not working on many of the streets. The 48205 zip code just east of you has been named the most dangerous zip code in Detroit.

As for the southwest side I don't make my way out there that often to know if it is that same or not but from what I hear it fared a hell of alot better than most. If you want to see how they look visually, you can use google maps, they did street view shots of both areas about a year and a half ago.
