The chances of this happening this century or even millennia are less than the Lions winning a dozen consecutive Super Bowls. I would find something else to worry about.

Well, you can't say that definitely. No matter how unlikely it is, money talks. Several billionaires other than Dan Gilbert are starting to buy property in Detroit. You don't believe Detroit can't turn around if the people with money want it to? Hell, if the whole region would get their heads out of their ass, Detroit could pull a 180 much sooner than later. But that would, admittedly, take a near miracle.

I didn't say it couldn't turn around, I said it would not resemble Manhattan. Do you have any clue what a 2 bedroom condo costs in Manhattan. About $5 million.

I don't think it would get to that level either and I don't want it to. Their prices are insane, even if you have money!

Ok I think some people are taking "Mini NY" too literal. I think the OP means what shape NYC is in right now.

In order to turn Detroit around, bluntly speaking you need to (1) bring in a lot of new inhabitants and (2) get rid of a lot of existing inhabitants. (1) is difficult, (2) would be the real problem. And no, they really can't coexist. A black person can get along with a white person and they can both get along with an Asian or Indian person as long as they all have same values and mentality, but ghetto and middle class mentality don't mix well.

No, there is already NYC for that. I am not big fan of NY and not much is there except for Manhattan. Everything else is super ghetto, filled of non-English speaking people in tight cramp area with horrible living condition (my family moved to Hamtramck from Astoria & we wouldn't go back). Don't make Detroit into a copy of another city. Detroit has unique location, rich history & unique people.

Do you know why there are so many poor black people in Detroit?

Because they all came up from the South looking for the leftover scraps of jobs they could get, which were the best jobs they could get.

I wouldn't be so haughty.

It's been great many decades between now and when these people came from South.

These hard working people were long dead.

Their children are in their 80s.

Their great-grandchildren are a very different breed.

You're also forgetting the rampant institutional racism. Ford Motor Company was one of the few companies (in all occupations) that gave blacks the same jobs and pay as whites back in the early 1900s. Integration didn't become prevalent well into the late 60s and 70s. But then residential segregation was still a problem as most well paying jobs started leaving the city for the suburbs where many blacks were shunned from moving to, even if they could afford to.

Literally throughout history, blacks have been continually denied opportunities for job mobility which has completely hindered income growth even to this day. Even after the 2008 housing crash, blacks were disproportionately affected by the stricter standards on housing mortgages which is the direct cause for the astronomical rate of foreclosures and vacancies within Detroit. And yet, still, most well-paying jobs that any black person with even the basic of skills are still dozens of miles out of reach and usually require a car to get to. Even if racism is not as rampant today, the racist polices of past generations didn't end overnight and their effects have yet to be repaired.
