Construction on the Gordie Howe bridge will start next summer, at least that's the plan at the moment. So far, 60% of the land needed on the Detroit side has been acquired. Most of the land that's left is owned by Matty Mouron so chances are likely eminent domain will have to be used to get those pieces of land and whatever else might be left over.

The bridge authority has funded the acquisition of 351 Detroit properties, but has only obtained 60 percent of the land needed on the U.S. side thus far, Cautillo said.

It must be weird to be so objectively and comprehensively wrong on an issue and yet keep arguing about it

I'm not convinced it's worth the money. The American car industry is near the end of its run. A new bridge looks like another bailout. Subsidizing the car industry to keep it running a few more years delays the start of the post-car economy. A longer-term solution is a railroad in a tunnel.

There is a railroad tunnel! Moroun uses the portion of track he owns to artificially limit the weight of freight that can be carried through the tunnel.

I am going to sidestep your objectively wrong analysis of the state of the American car industry and just point out that even if Detroit were reduced to dust tomorrow the Detroit River would still serve as the most convenient Crossing for goods being transported into Canada from any point west of Lake Erie.

Oil. The USA is very close to losing global hegemony, and with that goes its influence on oil prices. Without cheap oil, all traffic drops immediately. Abandoning the interstate highway system and rebuilding the railroads and streetcars will be a giant mess lasting decades, but one easy step is jailing Moroun and nationalizing his piece of railroad.

Best idea on CD this week. Can we tuck his son in next to him?

If we're going for fantasy scenarios, then how about having Moroun having a change of heart where it expands and then overfills with love and compassion for his city and fellow citizens and decides to deed his wealth and property to the city and its people?

The city doesn't want his money. He offered to build a new bridge at no cost to the city and state, and they said no. They rather have the taxpayers pay for it.
