I have a situation with my auto tax. My dealer is not very helpful. This is my situation.

I bought a pre-owned car from a dealer in Illinois, at that time i used to live in Ohio and paid the taxes to my dealer for Ohio and they made a check to Ohio department of revenue for the tax amount. My title also lists my Ohio Address. I haven't registered my car in Ohio.

But i moved to Michigan recently and i registered my car here in Michigan and paid my sales tax to Michigan Secretary of State. I used amount from my pocket to pay the taxes here in michigan since the check that my dealer gave me is for Ohio Department of Revenue.

After paying my taxes, i asked my dealer if they can void the check to Ohio department and issue the check on my name since i paid the taxes.

But, my dealer is saying, what i did is not right, i shouldn't have registered my car in Michigan. Is this really a problem. I told my situation to Michigan SOS and they didn't raise any flags. Now my amount is stuck with the dealer and they are not giving me back the amount.

One more thing, i bought the car through financing.

I want to know, is it a problem that i registered my car in Michigan, if it is problem is there a way to fix it.

Step one: Read all the agreements you signed including the financing documents. What do they say about registering the car, or taxes?

I've bought out-of-state vehicles a few times. I bought a truck from Arkansas, a truck from Michigan, and a car from Indiana, all while living in Ohio. In my experience, I've only had to pay tax for the state that I'm registering the vehicle in. I only paid Ohio tax when I got the new title made.
