But won’t the insurance companies refuse to pay out if they find out it was set intentionally?

Most houses that are burned down are vacant and arson. Mainly owned by the bank or city, so no one is doing it for insurance purposes.

There used to be a lot of fires set for insurance 20 or more years ago. People would often take advantage of "Devils Night" to set their property alight...then blame it on kids.

Expanding on this...

Some vacant houses are burned down due to a homeless person taking advantage of an abandoned house and who lights a fire trying to keep warm in the winter...

20-30 years ago a lot of fires were started as either insurance fraud, devil's night arson, and others in the neighborhood burning down vacant homes to avoid them becoming drug houses/gang-use/squatters/etc.

Now more of the fires that occur are due to squatters/homeless with open flames in abandoned homes or people with illegal electricity hook-ups.

I never heard of someone burning down their (not “there”) house. They burn down other people’s houses.
