Big news from 89x today. I'm a little surprised by this news considering their signal reaches 5 million on the US side. I don't think they will be as successful in Metro Detroit with an all Canadian staff.
Will they keep their US billboards? Will they continue to play US commercials?

89X closes American office, cuts morning show

Radio is slowly dying, you will probably see more and more of this in the coming years. On my commute I listen mostly to podcasts because I can choose topics and styles that interest me most. When listening to music I use various streaming services that are 1)commercial free, and 2)can be tailored more specifically to my tastes.

It sucks for a lot of people in that industry to be sure, but it is what it is.

89x just tweeted this today. Either everyone is in on the joke (unlikely) or this tweet was scheduled to go out automatically. Either way... It's been over 5 hours and nobody has deleted it.

All of the big local news sites have covered the story already so 89x must be sloppy with their social media postings.

I've always thought Detroit music stations have been falling in quality in recent years. Too many commercials. Also, increasingly, too much talk. When they do get around to playing music, it's usually the same 2 or 3 songs that were hits from 5 years ago. Almost no variety. I don't know if it's a nationwide thing or if there's something in the music industry to do with music licences or whatever, I just know I generally don't listen to the radio for enjoyment.

That's the reason why the new old school rap station 105.1 instantly went #1 in Detroit. I love 107.5 and 97.9 but during the day outside of rush hour and afternoon mixes they play the top 5-10 songs almost every hour, and it doesn't help that most mainstream hip hop sucks now days. At night time and weekends it's more enjoyable though. I will say this, listening to radio stations in other cities/ states... it is definitely a trend to play the same ol stuff. But honestly I think most of that is because the music that comes out now days gets boring FAST. I can name maybe a few songs a year that people will remember just 5 years from now.

It's sad anytime someone loses their job but I would actually prefer to see them replace the morning show with music. When I turn on the radio, that's really what I am interested in hearing, not talk radio. They've always played a lot of Canadian commercials so I don't think there will be a huge change with respect to that. After moving away from Detroit I actually realized that it's the Canadian influence that makes 89x unique and great. They play a lot of Canadian alt rock that you don't hear on other U.S. alternative stations (City and Colour, USS, Billy Talent etc). I just hope they don't reduce their signal because on a clear day I can pick up 89x here on the west side of Cleveland!

I agree and you're definitely right about the Canadian influence making it stand out. There's a ton of songs that I've heard on 89x throughout the years that may have received less to no airtime on an American station. I'm from NW Ohio and discovered 89x when I got my drivers license and know plenty of others there that still listen.

At the gym it's always Spotify for me. But my drive to/from work is short and the radio is easier for short drives. Or if I'm working outside in the yard or something around the house, I'll listen to the radio. I've also recently discovered that Dave and Chuck can also be heard on 101.1's HD3 sub-channel 24/7 which I will occasionally listen to.
