And that's the big reason. Cedar Point has been world class since at least 89 - that's when the Magnum opened as the tallest and fastest in the world. Even though Gemini opened in 78 as the tallest and fastest in the world.
The industry voted it the best park in the world from 97-2013! In 15, it was the most visited seasonal park in the world. Sure, Disney has it beat by a mile - 10 of the 12 most visited parks are Disney (and the other 2 are Universal Orlando).

Cedar also owns Michigan Adventure, so they do have an interest of squashing metro Detroit competition.

Typically Cedar Point will be populated by almost half of it's visitors being from Michigan. Ohio and PA make up the difference.

And Ontario, cedar Point is very popular in Southern Ontario!
