Where I grew up and lived most my life....how much safer is it actually getting? I know most of Detroit is being gentrified but I just don't see it in my old area.

In general, IMHO, the east side is not much safer.

Most of Detroit is not being gentrified. There are a few areas of the east side that are seeing increased development, residents, restaurants, and rising rents and home prices. These areas are the (1) Indian Village area and the neighborhoods to the north and east of Belle Isle, (2) the East English Village (near where Finney High School used to be), (3) and the neighborhood north of Hamtramck.

The other areas of the east side are still sliding. For instance, supposedly a few years ago, the 48205 zip code (7 Mile and Gratiot) was the most dangerous in the country. DPS is closing schools left and right, and threatened to closed Denby High School.
