My family and I have found a home in Stonewater subdivision in Northville, MI that we are interested in, but have heard about the trash dump in the area (6 Mile and Napier rd). This house is on one of the springfed lakes in this sub. My concern is that the trash dump could effect the cleanliness of the water. We have small children and don't want to jepardize our health. Any info would be helpful.

No one can tell you with certainty. You can test the water and that will tell you what is in it now. No one can say what might happen in the future. Dumps can leak pollutants. It happened in New Hudson and contaminated a lot of wells. The lake is perched water, so depending on where the water comes from, you may or may not be at risk IF the dump leaks.

Thank you for your response. I guess the city would not have allowed the subdivision to be built if it wasn't okay. But like you said, you never know what's going to happen in the future..... the thought of the segals flying around in the dump then washing off in the water grosses me out! I'll have research the contaminated wells incident in New Hudson. Thanks again!

I know exactly where that sub is, and the dump. I believe that it is pretty safe, unfortunatley in this day and age all of the water is polluted in some way. But the dump should not be to much of a hazzard for your health. Like mentined before, if you are worried you can always have it tested.

I wouldn't advise it, fishy things are going on at that dump, and I can confirm evidence of the disposal of hazardous chemicals in the watershed at that property. You can even see their wells in the surrounding wetlands by just driving around the perimeter of the property. This will potentially have long term effects on your family's health.

Another issue is the smell from the dump
We also thought about buying a house out by Ridgewood -- but found the odor that came off the dump was nasty at times. I'm glad we decided not to after talking to others. The dump has been a mixed concern for a lot of people who live closer to Ridge. We ended up at 6 & Sheldon.

Can someone tell me what the characteristics of a spring fed pond are? We are looking at a piece of property that has a big "pond" behind it....how do I know if it is spring fed or just stagnant water?

I believe all these homes have city water and sewer, no wells. This used to be an area of quarries that was developed into subdivisions.
