Default Thats horrific

High school dropouts are LOSERS, period. Its really the minimum life requirement....its not that hard.

I honestly believe, and black leaders will agree, that inner city black kids think that doing well in school is "acting white" Therefore they are lazy, uninterested, and drop out to prove they have "street cred" and are keeping it real.

Give me some legit reasons for dropping out of school.....this isn't 1923. Kids don't need to drop out anymore to help around the family farm.

Default I really doubt

I really doubt it's the mayor's fault that only 24% of Detroit high schoolers graduate. In fact, if anybody is to blame, I think it's the students that drop out.

I think it's the parents. And the welfare system that has kids growing up seeing no one go off to work and so they just don't see much need in trying.

I don't want "street cred". I would get completely scared thinking about it because in order to get "street cred".
My own math teacher from high school(who told me this privately when she gave the class an assignment regarding Dr. King's 'I Have A Dream' speech) told me that part of the reason for so much decay in the African-American community was the attitude of education being a "white thing". It's part of it and it's a start. With an education, you can be thrown out of one door and enter another one. There are more options.

In Detroit, kids drop out to support their families with illegal activities. Scrod knows legitimate jobs are thinnner on the ground in Detroit than they probably are on the Moon right now. Another reason they drop out is that the school systems aren't worth putting in the effort. A diploma from most of the schools in the area are worth less than a fistful of Confederate greenbacks. Cass Tech being a major exception.

Are the schools in Detroit losing accreditation? Clayton County schools in Georgia are coming close to that point now.

You guys better be careful if you talk like that in person. Making generalizations about blacks not doing well in school because it's too "white" implies that failure is integral to the black culture.

That's not an allowable topic.

Have you actually hung out in Detroit?

One in 1,000 might-- might-- drop out to support their families. However, "chillin'" is quite a temptation... Not to mention, a part time job at McDonald's is sufficient to pay rent in Detroit... and plenty of kids work a PT job and go to school.

Jobs for Detroit kids aren't that hard to come by... for those seeking to "support their families."... atleast not until a couple years ago.

And the diplomas aren't worthless. They'll get you into a community college and/or be sufficient to check the "yes" box on an application that asks if you have it.

Grow up and check out the real world before you dispense your perspective on it.

What I was trying to say is that there are 'some' blacks in school who view education as "a white thing".
