Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, passed away today at the age of 76, from pancreatic cancer.

-She had one of the most unbelieveably STRONG and beautiful voices the world has ever known

-She had a very successful music career, with memorable hits like "Respect", "Say a Little Prayer", "Spanish Harlem", "Chain of Fools", "Think", "Until You Come Back to Me", and "Pink Cadillac"

-She was very influential to many female artists that came after her, like Mary J. Blige and Beyonce

-Despite her fame, she remained a Metro Detroit resident to the end

-Elvis Presley also died on this day in 1977

A very sad day we all realized would be coming soon after she went into hospice. She was a musical pioneer and a civil rights activist, too... So much of my pop/R&B music coming of age had Aretha Franklin as its foundation. Said today's Freep: for all Detroit's musical luminaries over the years which, obviously, were amazing internationally, Aretha was at the top... that's really saying something...

So sad...I hope she had been kept as comfortable as possible. <3
"Until you come back to me" was my favorite.

Yes. We all share a respectful sadness for the passing of OUR Queen of Soul. Yet, let us first acknowledge her musical significance within our lifetime. Her music spanned the fabric of The United States of America from the 60's until present time. Her songs touched our souls, opened our hearts, and bridged the gaps which neither good intentions, nor gov't programs could ever accomplish.

As I see it, she was that Model Person whom espoused "Leaving Things for Us to Figure Out and Deal With."

An awesome performer and an effective activist in her own way. No idea if she was a nice person. I would have liked to have met her.

I loved the tribute they did in metro Detroit. As soon as the news came out, all the big electronic signs changed over from whatever they were advertising before -- Motor City Casino or whatever -- to her face, with the legend

I felt like losing hope and throwing in the towel when I heard she died, but she would not have approved of that. She is and was a great American.
