What kept us form buying this really super awesome mansion in Boston Edison neighborhood was "Where will the kids play?" We had schools and security figured out. Shopping - got it covered. On and on we were able to deal with the potential challenges, then we got to where will our kids ride their bikes, where will they play? No answer other than the house is so big they could ride their bikes inside. That was the killer. That and my wife was not all that interested in doing the urban pioneer thing again.

Oh and we forgot to consider what it would cost to heat 18,000 square feet, but that was nto a deal killer because we never thought about it.

Actually people often get some good advice in here for free. But at times one has to wade through some not so good advice. That not so good advice can range from people trying to be helpful without the proper knowledge to people who are bit full of themselves and just like to pontificate without really offering much help to an OP. My least favorite "not so helpful" are people who don't seem to bother to read the thread based on their response.

My habit is to offer help or advice where I feel knowledgeable and stay away where I don't.

I'm not familiar with Detroit in general but I think some sound advice came from jonnynonos

There are streets and blocks where buying a $40k house to retire in might make sense but I personally wouldn’t care what a single person told me about it save for residents and the police.

I just realized I know someone who could possibly be very helpful if you are wanting to move to the city.
She works for Mayor Duggan.
If you are looking to just buy a fixer upper to flip I would not bother her on your behalf.
