Hey all,

Will be moving this summer (July) to Windsor (from NYC). I will be working at Henry Ford hospital, so commuting daily from Windsor to Detroit (I am Canadian).

Sorry for all the Windsorcentric questions, but I figured Detroit forum would be the best one to post (there is no Windsor forum)

So some follow-up questions:

1) Whats better for daily commute with regards to cost, efficiency, ease. Ambassador Bridge or Tunnel?
2) Any neighborhoods to recommend in Windsor that is close to the Tunnel or Bridge?
3) How long does it take to get a Nexus Card? 3 months? 6 months?
4) Whats the commute like across the boarder? My hours will be around 6:45pam to 5pmish

Any other tips/recs would be appreciated!

Thanks!

You should also post these questions on the Detroit YES and Windsor Reddit pages. You will find Windsor residents on these pages that do the commute daily (including some that work at the same hospital).

IMHO, it will take about 4 months to get your NEXUS, you should take the Tunnel and live in either Walkerville or South Windsor.

Thanks for the quick reply, and for the advice on those 2 forums!

Welcome to Windsor!

I would choose the tunnel over taking the Ambassador Bridge, usually quicker to get through, no truck backups like the bridge, and the border agents are much nicer at the tunnel on both sides!

I would choose Walkerville, South Windsor or downtown, depending what you are looking for. Walkerville is the city’s premier old money neighbourhood, very charming with lots of victorians and row houses. Walkerville is your best bet for a close, beautiful, well kept neighbourhood!

Commute times will vary, depending on the day and the time. Sometimes you can get through in minutes, and sometimes you will be stuck in traffic for quite a while. Your hours look like it will be fairly busy for crossing.

We have at least 6 people in our company who do a daily commute from Windsor to Detroit. They seem to think it is reasonable and have been doing it for years. One other just moved over to the US side, but that was because she did not like the Canadian medical system, not because the commute is a problem. I know there is a phone app that tells you which crossing location if the fastest at any given day/time. I do not know what the app is called.

If you have to be at work at 6:45 a.m. you will be crossing around 6 a.m. so it should not be busy. Going home may be more difficult. Most of our people leave around 3:30 - 4 p.m. Some of them are in at 7 a.m. some at 6. If you have to work until 5 p.m. perhaps you cna join a club and work out after work, or go to dinner someplace before going home. Frnakly I would not want ot try gong anywhere at 5.p.m.
