Lot of news coming, like GM is committing 2.2B in detroit plants. When I look at the plant location, it looks lke it is in high crime area.

Do you think this will lift the area out of poverty?

No, not on its own. But it could be another step towards Detroit proper regaining some footing. This is exactly the kind of thing Detroit needs. If GM is willing to make the investment, I say hurray.

This plant has been in existence in this location since the 1980s and its going to see investment and overhaul to make the newest generation of EVs. This doesn't fundamentally change anything in the immediate area around the plant as its an existing facility that is adjacent to two of the regions' busiest highways. The existing workforce will remain intact, and/or come from seniority rights from other facilities, or eventually some new hires as needed.

In late 2018 the announcement was made that this plant would be idled but many knew there was no way they would completely abandon a plant in the city of Detroit less than 3 miles from their global HQ. There was always a plan for this plant but it was a bit of gamesmanship with the pending UAW contract negotiation.

The plant when built in the 1980s was highly controversial for the way the land was obtained and knocking down established neighborhoods of polish immigrants in Hamtramck.

Regardless of such, Hamtramck to the north this a community that it holding its own, has a bunch of interesting restaurants and local businesses and has becoming a kind of hipster-ville. The area to the west across I-75, Milwaukee Junction is heavily dominated by railroad and industrial properties, but also has New Center which is starting to see spill over redevelopment from Midtown area.

In the end its good, and it was expected this plant would continue to play a role in some shape or form as an assembly plant. The actual better news is the fact there are some suppliers that are co-locating in proximity of the plant in some nearby industrial properties that had been vacant for years. While some are simply just sequencing or crossdock facilities, there have been some new supplier manufacturing facilities added nearby. That and also FCA building its new plant nearby is actually a bigger deal from a labor and employment perspective.

The Chevy Volt was made there recently. It only made sense for their next generation EV vehicle to be made there. Of course with every new product that plant needs to be modified. with Volt being canceled, the plant was temporary shut down without a firm confirmation that something else was going to be made there. now GM has confirmed it. For that community, this is business as usual. Glad GM didn't not throw a curveball and shut the plant down completely.

The crime looks high in that area because in the Detroit side, there is nothing but industry in that area.

It might be a high crime area but those seeing impact are likely looking for trouble. Your average plant worker will not be impacted. Is GM going to raise Detroit out of poverty? Not a chance but it's good to see jobs coming back. Hopefully this leads to longstanding jobs.
