I have eaten at places around there. Pretty safe for me as well taking my grandma out there.

I have visited quite a few "rough" cities as people would say. Every where from Detroit, St. Louis, Long Beach, Carol City-Miami, Houston, got lost in L.A. and ended up going down Crenshaw Blvd and was in Compton asking for directions.

The advice I give people who are 'scared' to walk around a city is just act like you are supposed to be there and keep to yourself. Don't walk with your head down looking all scared and don't keep looking over your shoulder every 5 seconds. Keep aware of your surroundings, but don't act all paranoid. That makes you an easy target even if someone just wants to screw with you for fun.

just my $0.02....Wait, actually I can't afford that, just my $0.01...

Even downtown, Detroit is not threatening. I am there every day. I walk around at night.

Detroit is VERY threatening. Less so downtown, but threatening nonetheless. If you act like a target or a victim, you'll be treated as such, probably sooner than later, even if it's just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Yes, it can happen anywhere, but it's a lot more likely to happen within the city limits of Detroit.

DETROIT (AP) - Two men have been shot to death outside a downtown Detroit nightclub.

Detroit police spokesman James Tate says the victims were 21 and 19. They were shot in the chest about 2:15 a.m. Friday by a passenger in a black Dodge Charger outside Club Blue.

An 18-year-old was in critical condition after being shot in the shoulder.

A liquor bottle was thrown from the car, hitting the 18-year-old in the face before the shots were fired. Police still are seeking the suspects, who drove off.
