An edgy and popular nightspot.

See if you can find where they are filming 'Batman v Superman'.
9/12-9/14 Funky Ferndale art fair.
Guided bike brewery tours at Traffic Jam & Snug restaurant.
Saturday midday, prowl Eastern Market. Might be jazz later on.

In Dearborn, the Henry Ford Museum. Fun, not stodgy, Americana.
Greenfield Village - America's Ideas and Innovations

You just missed the downtown jazz festival and Dally In The Alley.
Downtown & midtown, The university district, Corktown, North Woodward, Dearborn.

Just avoid blindly wandering the neighborhoods - there are good and bad, but not much of interest there anyway.

What is there downtown (like, within walking distance of the hotel) that would be worth checking out, either in the afternoon after checking in or later in the evening? Is the area right around there pretty rough, or... ?

You are near Cobo Center. I worked in that area years ago and it is safe. Downtown has a convention business to protect, but crime has happened but it is not a hotbed of crime. Being post-Labor Day, I can't speak to events which might be at Hart Plaza, but you can stroll the waterfront. I also can't speak to all newer restaurants but you can check Greektown, casinos, The Fillmore. There are various tours, including segways.

I guess you will be too late for Eastern Market. Since I've been away 15 years, there is probably more which I am not aware of. There is a tourist center down there somewhere, but first thing, check for brochure handouts and other info in your hotel (formerly the Ponchartrain).

The Motown Museum (in Midtown), tours only and quite "entertaining" I understand.
