I hope so! The Detroit city council is basically run by idiots.

Agreed.

By that point, PA4 will be frozen and Bankruptcy will be the only option.

Let Detroit go bankrupt.

Put an end to all of the political grandstanding and tit-for-tat and bring in a third party (federal government, outside the state) who will likely think we're all loons. everyone loses.

I'm with you guys.

When the city is blaming the state for not giving it money from a consent agreement that the city itself is contesting... well, there is no way to fix that level of idiocy other than bankruptcy.

On a more light-hearted note, someone can become filthy stinkin' rich turning all of this crap into a Movie, Book or TV show.

Not even Stephen King can come up with something this wacky.

Maybe a new Michael Moore movie?

Can't someone RIF the entire council? And why won't Bing fire this lawyer? Who is she working for, herself or the city?

Not even close.

Detroit's bankruptcy would, by far, be the largest municipal bankruptcy in history, with $12-$14 billion dollars in debt.

even the bankuptcy of Jefferson County (county of Birmingham) in Alabama, which is probably the bst analog, was only for a total debt of $4.2 million (1/4 to 1/3 of Detroit's debt).

No one really knows how Detroit and Michigan will fare in terms of impact from the bankruptcy of the city (which is why everyone wants to avoid it), since we would be entering in uncharted waters, granted Detroit's bankruptcy would set the precedent for other major municipalities who may encounter their own financial crisis soon.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-08-22/jefferson-county-agony-means-higher-borrowing-costs-for-alabama-taxpayers.html

But one thing's for sure, if Jefferson County's bankruptcy impact to the entire state of Alabama is any sign, Detroit and Michigan is in some deep **** if Detroit does end up in bankruptcy court. And Michigan cities and counties already have much larger budget problems than the cities and counties in Alabama did

RIF the Council? What is RIF?

As for firing Crittendon, that requires a supermajority vote of the council (ain't happening) and the consent of the Mayor to remove here, per the city charter that took effect in January. As for the powers she has, blame the idiots who drafted the charter and the idiots who signed off on it without reading it first.

Furthermore, Crittendon is the City's Attorny. Her job is to look out for the best LeGAL interest of the city. Someone (Watson) requested that she verify the validity of the agreement, and she believes it violates the city charter (and she may actually have a good case as to why). But you can't demonize her for doing her job as an Attorney.

The most frustrating part is seeing how easy (well, relative to the alternative) it is to avoid bankruptcy. In fact, a former Detroiter of a Troy consulting firm even gave 17 different ways Detroit could save money.

Rochelle Riley: Troy firm develops bold plan to cut costs, beef up police and save Detroit | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

And here's what stood out most to me.

Quote:
Even with the proposed reductions of Human Services, Health & Wellness Promotion, Human Rights and Airport, Detroit is attempting to fund too many agencies that do not impact quality of life, the buying decision of residents and businesses or satisfy a statutory requirement of governance. Also, eliminate the designation of enterprise and general fund departments. All of the traditional enterprise agencies have received general fund subsidy via direct contribution or interdepartment loans.
What city have you heard of that cuts funding to police and EMS before privatizing buses? Why are they cutting out the lights when they could have DTE maintain them? WHY IS THE CITY OF DETROIT MAKING IT SO HARD FOR THEMSELVES?

At this point, I'm surprised there's not more council members than there are citizens who live in the city.
